Activities: Hiking

Summit Older Bushwhackers (SOBs)

Wednesdays, 9 a.m. | June – September

Summit Older Bushwhackers (SOBs) backcountry hikes are weather dependent on Wednesdays, meeting at 9 a.m. Hiking trails average five to six miles round-trip with an elevation gain around 1,000 to 1,500 feet.

Walkie-Talkies

Tuesdays, 9 a.m. | June – September

Walkie-Talkies is a moderate-level hiking group, ideal for those who are comfortable with a faster-paced hike at shorter distances. They hike on backcountry trails on Tuesdays, meeting at 9:00 a.m. to carpool to the trailhead. Hike distances are two to six miles round-trip, with an elevation gain of no more than 1,800 feet. The group starts with easier trails in June and progresses to longer, more difficult hikes throughout the season. These hikes usually have a destination that includes mining artifacts, wildflowers and/or spectacular views (that’s where the talking comes in).

Canine Companions

Wednesdays, 9 a.m.| April – October

Canine Companions hike mostly moderate-level backcountry trails on Wednesdays. Reasonably well-behaved dogs, as well as dog-less (also well-behaved) people, are welcome. The group meets at 9:00 a.m. to carpool. Bring leashes.

Mountain Goats

Wednesdays, times vary | June – September

Mountain Goats hikes are our most difficult hikes, which are not suitable for beginners. The group communicates by Yahoo Groups; our group name is “SummitMountainGoats,” no spaces, and this is the best way to know “the Goats.” There are 150 members; however, a typical hiking group will have around 15 people—many members are “virtual Goats” who enjoy the post-hike reports and photos.

Herd of Turtles (HOTs)

Thursdays, 9 a.m. | June – October

This hiking group is perfect for people new to Summit County. They normally hike a trail leaving at 9:00 a.m. and walk until around 11:00, then all turnaround and hike back to the trailhead. The fast hikers pick up the slower hikers on the way back. Everyone hikes at his or her own speed, so slow, medium and fast hikers are all welcome. After the hike, the group usually plans an optional lunch at a nearby restaurant.

Trailwork

First Fridays, 9 a.m. – Noon | June – August

Join the seniors and Friends of the Dillon Ranger District (FDRD) on the first Friday of the month (June through August), 9:00 a.m. to noon, as they do campsite restoration (cleaning and rehab; no heavy lifting). For more information, contact Steve Alberico at stevenpalberico@gmail.com.
